Das Buddy-Programm findet erstmalig auf der PuG 2022 in Freiburg statt und verbindet PuG-Neulinge (Mentees) mit erfahrenen PuG-Teilnehmer:innen (Mentor:innen) in sogenannten “Buddy-Teams”. Das Programm soll den Mentees dabei helfen, sich auf der PuG zu orientieren, nette Leute kennenzulernen und ihr Netzwerk zu erweitern.
Die Grundidee
Beim ersten Konferenzbesuch fühlt man sich schnell verloren. Es gilt nicht nur, die Logistik zu meistern und die richtigen Vortragsräume zur richtigen Zeit zu finden. Auch Kontakt zu anderen Fachkolleg:innen herzustellen kann eine Herausforderung sein. Und dann ist da noch das Rahmenprogramm - an was sollte ich unbedingt teilnehmen?
Mentor:innen können im Rahmen des Buddy Programms eine hilfreiche Stütze sein: Sie führen ihre Mentees in die PuG-Welt ein, geben Tipps, verschaffen einen Überblick und geben einen Schubs beim Netzwerken. Umgekehrt erweitern auch die Mentor:innen ihr Netzwerk durch ihren Mentee, und lernen die PuG womöglich noch einmal aus einem anderen Blickwinkel kennen.
Welche Aufgaben haben die Mentor:innen und was erwartet die Mentees?
Es gibt keine festen Vorgaben für die individuellen Buddy-Teams. Wir empfehlen mindestens ein persönliches Treffen vor oder zum Start der PuG, beispielsweise innerhalb des Begrüßungsabends. Mentor:innen können Tipps und Tricks zum PuG-Ablauf (z.B. “Wie entscheide ich, welche Sessions ich besuche?” oder “Wie minimiere ich Stress während eines vollgepackten PuG-Tags?”) teilen, Veranstaltungen (z.B. das JuWi-Treffen) empfehlen oder ihren Mentee Kolleg:innen vorstellen. Auch informeller Austausch über Forschungsthemen oder andere Kolleg:innen vorzustellen sind Möglichkeiten Mentees zu einem guten Start in der PuG Community zu verhelfen. Die Mentor:innen können den Mentees auch für Fragen während und im Vorfeld der PuG zur Verfügung stehen.
Jungwissenschaftler:innen, die bereits über ihre Arbeitsgruppe Unterstützung erfahren, können von der zusätzlichen Perspektive, die “externe” Mentor:innen bieten können, profitieren.

Wir werden euch dann im Mai kontaktieren und euch mitteilen, wer euer Buddy-Teampartner ist. Dann habt ihr ausreichend Zeit, im Vorfeld der PuG per E-Mail Kontakt zu eurem Buddy aufzunehmen.

The Buddy Program will take place for the first time at PuG 2022 in Freiburg and connects PuG newcomers (mentees) with experienced PuG participants (mentors) in so-called "buddy teams". The program is designed to help mentees get their bearings at PuG, meet nice people, and expand their network.
The basic idea
When attending a conference for the first time, it's easy to feel lost. It's not just a matter of mastering the logistics and finding the right lecture rooms at the right time. Making contact with other colleagues can also be a challenge. And then there's the social program - what should I definitely take part in?
In our buddy program, mentors can be a helpful support: they introduce their mentees to the PuG world, give tips, provide an overview, and give a little push when it comes to networking. Conversely, the mentors also expand their network through their mentees and possibly get to know PuG from a different perspective.
What tasks do the mentors have and what can the mentees expect?
There are no fixed requirements for the individual buddy teams. We recommend at least one personal meeting before or at the start of the PuG, for example during the welcome evening. Mentors can share tips and tricks about the PuG process (e.g., "How do I decide which sessions to attend?" or "How do I minimize stress during a packed PuG day?"), recommend events (e.g., the JuWi meeting), or introduce their mentee to colleagues. Informal exchanges about research topics or introducing other colleagues are also ways to help mentees get off to a good start in the PuG community. Mentors can also be available to answer questions during and before the PuG.
Young scientists who are already receiving support through their research group can benefit from the additional perspective that "external" mentors can provide.
