Methods retreat for young researchers

As part of the promotion of young researchers in the Methods and Evaluation section, the young member representatives (Susanne Frick and Julien Irmer), in collaboration with Florian Scharf from the University of Kassel, are organising a retreat for young researchers of the department in October 2024. The retreat will take place from 9-11 October 2024 at the University of Kassel. In addition to scientific presentations by the participating young researchers, a workshop on "Introduction to Bayesian Inference: Core Principles and Application in Stan" by Daniel Heck, a keynote speech by Mirka Henninger on machine learning, a panel discussion on "Careers inside and outside academia" and working groups on various topics for young researchers are planned.

The submission of contributions is open until 15 June 2024 at this link https://forms.gle/JFzPqWzs1wLjzjBEA

The programme can be found here.

Virtual Lab Visit

Scientific exchange and cooperation are essential for early career researchers. At the same time, these are often associated with travelling, which is difficult to implement due to family responsibilities, caring responsibilities, teaching commitments, lack of funding or pandemic-related restrictions. The young members of the DGPs have therefore launched "Virtual Lab Visits". In addition to improving compatibility for young researchers, Virtual Lab Visits also promote climate protection by avoiding travelling.

Virtual Lab Visits are virtual visits to a host institution abroad. An agreement between the early career researcher and the researcher at the host institution sets out the framework conditions before the virtual lab visit begins.

We ask working groups in Germany and abroad that would like to offer the possibility of a Virtual Lab Visit to contact the current young member representatives in order to be listed on the section homepage. Young researchers send their completed agreement to the Young Member Representatives of the division, who collect them. After the Virtual Lab Visit, the young researchers write a short report on the Virtual Lab Visit, which is published on the departmental website, possibly together with any publications resulting from the Virtual Lab Visit.

The agreement can be retrieved here.

Travel expenses for students

The section of Methods and Evaluation supports the participation of students in national and international methodological conferences. Students who have distinguished themselves through good methodological research work (e.g. Bachelor's, Master's or Diploma thesis) during their studies can receive financial support from the section to present their research work at a conference. Funding is available for people who are still studying at the time of application or who graduated no more than twelve months ago.

The section subsidises travel expenses up to €250 for national conferences and up to €500 for international conferences. The following documents must be submitted with the application (in electronic form only):

  • Title and abstract of the presentation
  • Proof of acceptance of the presentation
  • Endorsement of the application by a member of the Methods and Evaluation section

Applications are to be addressed to the spokesperson of the section.

"Internal Networking" Programme

With the "Internal Networking" programme, the Methods and Evaluation section aims to support the establishment of new research collaborations in the field of methods. Up to 3 tandems or project groups wishing to jointly initiate a new research project were funded with an amount of up to €500 each. The tandems or project groups should consist of scientists from different institutions/universities and different career stages (at least one young member).

Three project groups were funded in the 2022 call:

  • Matthias Kloft, Daniel Heck & Jean-Paul Snijder: "Reliability of interval response formats"
  • Marie-Ann Sengewald & Mirka Henninger: "Identifying relevant predictors for differential item-functioning: A comparison of different machine learning based approaches"
  • Laura König & Andreas B. Neubauer: "Measurement reactivity in smartphone-based dietary assessment"

We congratulate the project groups and wish them every success in realising their research projects!
