1. DoB DISTINGUISHED LECTURES, 2003
Each year, the Decade of Behavior Distinguished Lecture Program--funded by the McDonnell Foundation--supports major addresses at the annual conferences of up to five endorsing societies. Lecturers and topics
are centered on Decade themes and are selected to showcase research that promotes a cross-disciplinary approach.
The 2003 speaker roster is as follows:
- American Association for Public Opinion Research: Richard Petty- Distinguished University Professor of Psychology, Ohio State University \Understanding the Process of Public Opinion Formation and Changes\ (DoB theme: Democracy)
- International Society for Developmental Psychobiology: Bruce McEwen -Alfred E. Mirsky Professor, Rockefeller University (Laboratory of Neuroendocrinology) \The Neurobiology and Neuroendocrinology of Stress\ (DoB theme: Health, Education)
- Neurobehavioral Teratology Society, Ann Streissguth-Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington
- School of Medicine \Effect of Prenatal Alcohol on Long-term Development, Family, and Communities\ (DoB theme: Health, Safety, Education)
- Society for Personality and Social Psychology: Jared Diamond- Professor, Department of Physiology, UCLA School of Medicine; author of Pulitzer Prize winning book, \Guns, Germs, and Steel\; 1999 Recipient of the National Medal of Science \The Fate of Human Societies: A Challenge to Racism in Theories of Human Development\ (DoB theme: Health, Prosperity)
2. NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE - NEW MEMBERS for 2003
The new year also brings new governance to the Decade, as six members rotate off the National Advisory Committee and six new members join.
This committee, which guides the initiative, comprises a panel of distinguished scientists representing diverse disciplines, research areas, and geographic provenance. (Please see attached article for brief bios on each member):
- Robert Kaplan- Professor and Chair, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, University of California (preventive and behavioral medicine)
- David Takeuchi- Professor, School of Social Work, University of Washington (mental health, health, and culture)
- Steven Pinker - Peter de Florez Professor, Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Mac Vicar Faculty Fellow, MIT (linguistics and psychology, language acquisition)
- Ruth McRoy - Distinguished Teaching Professor, Associate Dean for Research, Director of the Center for Social Work Research, and Ruby Lee Piester Centennial Professor in Services to Children and Families, School of Social Work and Center for African and African-American Studies, University of Texas (racial and cultural issues in adoption and child welfare)
- Alexander van Eye -Professor of Psychology, Michigan State University (methods and statistics, developmental psychology) (*International DoB Affiliate)
- Ellen Wartella- Dean of the College of Communication, Walter Cronkite Regents Chair of Communication, and Mrs. Mary Gibbs Jones Centennial Chair in Communication at the University of Texas, Austin (mass communication, children and media)
3. ARTICLE FOR YOUR SOCIETY NEWSLETTER
To update your members on recent Decade happenings, you may wish to publish the attached article in your society newsletter. Please feel free to edit for length if necessary.
4. DoB WEB PAGE IN SPANISH
The Decade website now has information about the DoB in Spanish.
